Creating Custom Ironwork

Whether wrought-iron railings, custom gates, or lighting - It's increasingly difficult to find ironwork that is both well-built and attractive. Regardless of cost, you’re often stuck with industrial-style prison-bars or a bad imitation of historical work.

But there is a better option – A blacksmith can work metal in ways that a welder or a fabricator can't. Most “custom railings” are prefabricated parts chosen out of an industry catalogue. This allows them to be predictable for quoting estimates, but it is also why most modern ironwork is so lifeless.

By contrast, the methods of the modern blacksmith allow artistic freedom. Each project can be made unique, without compromising beauty or function.

Working with a Blacksmith

Every project - from a simple handrail to the most ornate entrance gate - is specifically designed for its setting, and forged by hand from virgin stock. This is more labor-intensive and less profitable than modern fabrication, but the end result is a depth and elegance that 21st Century methods can't match.

All together, this means that working with a blacksmith is different than hiring a railing installer or a “welder who does gates”. You are acquiring an original work of art, not just a building fixture. The 21st blacksmith is not a tradesman but an artisan; beauty and function are our main concerns.

The Design

Process

Fine ironwork will outlast us all, so it's important to get it right.

For each project, the first step is to view the site and discuss what is needed, and what is suitable. With a firm direction in mind, we will proceed to draw up a formal design for your approval. This can be a quick sketch for a smaller project, or detailed plans for a large one. This stage is critical - the single greatest concern is that you are happy with your design, and that you remain so.

With the plan approved, we will take a construction deposit and begin forging. The length of time until completion depends on the project, and - since 2020 - sometimes on the vicissitude of the global supply chain. Even so, most projects are ready in weeks to months.

Quality of finished work is paramount, and we are obligated take the time required.

COST

Each project is unique, suited to the owner and its setting. In general, the nature of the work results in a slight premium over modern, industrial methods - but the end result is always superior.

For simple projects such as handrails or balustrades, rough estimates can usually be provided after a brief discussion. More involved projects will require completing a preliminary design.

Whatever your need - from railings to memorial sculptures, reach out and we’ll make it a reality.
